HS code lookup

An HS code, or commodity code, is the number that tells customs exactly what your goods are. The first six digits are the international Harmonised System, used the same way worldwide. The UK adds four more to make a ten digit code for imports.

That code decides the duty and VAT you pay, whether a licence or plant health certificate is needed, and whether a preferential rate applies. Getting it wrong is one of the more common reasons an entry is queried or an importer overpays.

Commodity codes come from the UK Trade Tariff as you search. Classification is the importer's responsibility, so confirm the code before you declare on it, or ask us to check it.

Got your code? Work out what the duty and import VAT come to with the import duty and VAT estimator (UK).
